“I love this band, but it doesn’t mean everything to me. I always think this band is going to fold up all the time – I really do. I never thought it would last five minutes, but I figured I’d live that five minutes to the hilt because I love them. I don’t care if I retire now, but I don’t know what I’d do if I stopped doing this. I’d go mad.”
Charlie Watts’ relationship with The Rolling Stones was one of consistency, professionalism, and subtle rebellion. As the band’s drummer from its formation in 1962 until his death in 2021, Watts was the steadfast backbone of their sound, known for his calm demeanor and unwavering rhythm. While Keith Richards and Mick Jagger often took the spotlight due to their flamboyant personalities and songwriting contributions, Watts’ steady drumming provided the foundation for the band’s success.
Despite the band’s chaotic lifestyle, Charlie was often described as the calm, grounded member of the Stones. He didn’t indulge in the same rock-and-roll excesses as his bandmates, preferring a quieter life outside of the limelight. His drumming was fundamental to the band’s distinctive sound, often playing a supportive, solid role without the showiness of other drummers of the era.
In interviews, Watts was known to be respectful of the band’s dynamic, but he wasn’t afraid to speak his mind, particularly about his distaste for the band’s media-driven lifestyle. While he never sought to be the focal point, his contributions to the band’s songs solidified his place as an essential part of the Rolling Stones’ legacy.
Though Watts occasionally expressed frustration with the band’s fame and the pressure it brought, he remained committed to the Rolling Stones for nearly six decades, making him one of the most respected figures in rock music history. His relationship with the Stones was one of mutual respect, with his steadfast dedication helping to keep the group together through its many trials and triumphs.
