Keith Richards about the ‘Some Girls’ album
“It’s another one of those impossible things to put your finger on because it was a great studio, first time that we’d worked with Chris Kimsey, who was one in a long line of Olympic Studios – that’s in England, folks, for you that don’t know – T-boys who’ve always been our best engineers… And it all came together very nicely. And you gotta remember it was Ronnie’s first full album, first real album with the Stones. Some Girls was kind of like Beggars Banquet. Like we’d been away for a bit, and we came back with a bang“. The Rolling Stones’ Some Girls album, released in 1978, is widely regarded as one of their finest works, a gritty and dynamic response to the changing musical landscape of the late 1970s. It blends rock, punk, disco, and country influences into a cohesive, energetic collection that reestablished the band’s relevance and commercial success.
Chris Kimsey, an accomplished recording engineer and producer, played a significant part in the creation of Some Girls. While not the album’s producer—that role was filled by Mick Jagger and Keith Richards under their “Glimmer Twins” moniker—Kimsey served as the album’s recording engineer. His technical expertise was crucial in capturing the raw energy and improvisational spirit that defines Some Girls.
Kimsey worked closely with the band at Pathé Marconi Studios in Paris, where much of the album was recorded. The sessions were marked by a stripped-down approach, with fewer overdubs and a focus on live takes, reflecting the influence of punk’s raw, unpolished aesthetic. This approach gave Some Girls a fresh and immediate sound that contrasted with the more polished albums of the previous decade.
