Rolling Stones quotes: Keith Richards on the band getting nostalgic
For a band with more than six decades of history The Rolling Stones have heard the nostalgia label plenty of times. But Keith Richards has always viewed that idea a little differently. In a 1997 conversation, he explained why the Stones never wanted to become a museum piece playing only memories from the past. Their secret was not looking backwardโit was keeping the wheels turning, writing new songs, and chasing the next musical spark. Nostalgia may ride along in the back seat, but for Richards, the engine was always creativity. Apparently, even after all those years, retirement was still a bad excuse.
“Nobody in the band ever talks about the band’s longevity among themselves or puts their finger on it. I think some of it is just what you do, and if you don’t do it, you go nuts, and the other is how far can it go, you know. We still feel we’re getting better and we have things to offer you know, and we ain’t The Beach Boys, some nostalgia band, you know what I mean. There’s plenty of nostalgia, obviously, after all these years involved, but I mean we don’t rely on it alone. I mean our main joy is to make new songs – nostalgia (laughs) in a way it’s ahโฆ and nobody wants to get off the bus, because it’s still going, you know. It’s very difficult, you hurt yourself getting off buses when they’re moving. Do not alight while moving.”

Rolling Stones: The Relentless Drive
Keith Richards paints a vivid picture of life on the moving bus that is the Rolling Stones. Longevity isnโt a trophy the band discusses; itโs more like a road that just keeps stretching forward. Thereโs no map, no debate over how far they can goโthey just keep playing, writing, and pushing themselves. Nostalgia is there, sure, a faint echo of decades past, but itโs never the destination. The thrill, the real joy, comes from creating new songs, exploring new rhythms, and keeping the music alive and evolving. Stepping off that bus too early, he says, would be painfulโalmost impossible.
Nostalgia, Not the Compass
The Stones embrace the years behind them without letting it define them. Theyโre not โThe Beach Boysโ, a nostalgia act clinging to old hits; theyโre a living, breathing entity that thrives on momentum. The past is honored, yes, but the pulse of new music keeps them awake, engaged, and perpetually moving forward, bus and all.
