Rolling Stones Quotes: Mick Jagger about his family background
“My mum is very working class, my father bourgeois, because he had a reasonably good education, so I came from somewhere in between that. Neither one nor the other.”

Mick Jagger comes from a pretty regular background, at least compared to the wild rock ‘n’ roll persona he later built. Born on July 26, 1943, in Dartford, Kent, England, Mick was the eldest of two children. His father, Joe Jagger, was a teacher and a factory worker, and his mother, Eva, worked as a hairdresser. Growing up in a working-class family, Mick wasn’t exactly raised in luxury, but he was surrounded by a love for music, which would later shape his entire career.
Joe, Mick’s father, was a strict and disciplined man. He was a firm believer in hard work, but he wasn’t overly affectionate, which apparently had a big impact on Mick’s early years. He’s talked about how his father was the type to keep a distance emotionally, and it was Eva who was the more nurturing and loving figure in his life. Mick’s relationship with his parents wasn’t exactly the rock star cliché of rebellion against authority, but he did feel the weight of their expectations, especially when it came to education.
Eva, on the other hand, was the one who encouraged Mick’s interest in music. She supported his decision to pursue it, even when he was just a teenager. Mick showed early signs of musical talent, and his mother encouraged him to follow that path, even though it wasn’t the typical career choice for a young man in their community.
Mick Jagger’s family background wasn’t glamorous, but it definitely helped shape the man who would go on to become one of the most famous musicians in the world. His relationship with his parents was complex, but in the end, they played a key role in his journey to stardom.
