More about Let Me Go by The Rolling Stones
*By Marcelo Sonaglioni

Much like Gotta Get Away and Out of Time, tracks from a few years earlier, this song carries that same bittersweet tone of separation. Mick Jagger delivers the line, “The party’s over, let me go,” with a sense of finality, signaling the end of a relationship. The shift from the previous song is dramatic—this one is all about heartbreak and moving on.
As the song unfolds, he delivers a reality check, warning that the perfect love the girl has imagined—perhaps inspired by fairy tales or romance novels—simply doesn’t exist. His voice drips with both regret and certainty, reinforcing the theme of disillusionment.
Now, the lover is fully embracing the idea of freedom—so much so that he’s even fantasizing about hitting up gay bars. Classic Jagger cynicism at its finest! “Let Me Go” might not be one of the Stones’ biggest hits, but it sure had its moment, going over well with crowds during the 1981–1982 tour. Its punchy energy and raw attitude made it a great live track, proving that even the lesser-known Stones songs can pack a serious punch onstage.
The Rolling Stones have always excelled at capturing the raw emotions of love and loss, and here, they do it again with a mix of melancholy and honesty. The song stands as yet another reminder that not every romance has a happy ending, no matter how much one wishes for it.
