From Martin Elliott’s book THE ROLLING STONES COMPLETE RECORDING SESSIONS 1962-2012:
Take your pick on the backing cast. Andrew Oldham and Mick Jagger recorded the song principally for Chris Farlowe. The track is orchestrated and features female backing vocals. Art Greenslade arrange dthe backing track, which was also used for the Chris Farlowe single. Mick Jagger produced the single and thereby prompted a British number 1 for Farlowe in June 1966. The contemptuous lyrics fired yet another swipe at the demeanour of women. Decca released the track with Mick Jagger on vocals as a single in 1975 from the dubious Metamorphosis compilation. At the same time Chris Farlowe’s version was released and Dan McCafferty, ex-Nazareth Scottish rock singer, completed a bit of history with the unusual appearance of three versions of Out of Time in the lower reaches of the British charts in September 1975. out of time metamorphosis

The Metamorphosis version of Out of Time, released in 1975, offers a fresh take on this well-loved Rolling Stones song, with a distinctive twist: it includes the guitar work of Jimmy Page, who would later become a rock legend with Led Zeppelin. Recorded back in 1966, this version captures a moment when the Stones were exploring new sounds, drawing in other talented musicians for collaboration. Jimmy Page’s contribution on guitar brings a unique texture to the track, as his bright, jangly playing style perfectly balances Mick Jagger’s vocals, adding a lively, pop-oriented vibe that stands apart from other renditions.

Metamorphosis itself is an intriguing album, filled with outtakes, demos, and other rarities from the Stones’ archives. For fans, it’s a goldmine of lesser-known recordings and unique collaborations, like this version of Out of Time that spotlight the Stones’ creative processes and musical connections. Jimmy Page’s role in the track also highlights the close-knit British rock scene of the ’60s, when many artists—often before reaching superstardom—worked together, supporting each other in sessions that would later become gems in rock history.
