Rolling Stones songs: Petrol Blues

My friend says the trouble is this country’s too goddamn big/ Maybe we should pull it in from the ages a bit…

Also known an: Petrol Gang
Written by: Jagger/Richards
Recorded: Pathé Marconi Studios, Boulogne-Billancourt, France, June-Sept. 1979

From Martin Elliott’s book THE ROLLING STONES COMPLETE RECORDING SESSIONS 1962-2012:
A piano supplied by Ian Stewart or Mick Jagger is the only instrument on this song. The vocals by Mick revolve around the petrol crisis and the lack of fuel as the petrol manufacturers’ stockpile it. He asks Mr. President (Jimmy Carter) for help since he does not want to sell his new Cadillac.

Petrol Blues is a humorous and bluesy outtake recorded in 1979 during the Emotional Rescue sessions. The track features Mick Jagger improvising lyrics about the frustrations of a fuel shortage, a nod to the energy crises of the time. Its stripped-down, off-the-cuff style showcases the band’s knack for turning everyday observations into engaging music.
It hadn’t been officially released until 2011 as part of the Some Girls deluxe edition. Petrol Blues has circulated among fans through bootlegs, becoming a cult favorite for its candid charm and insight into the Stones’ creative process.
