Rolling Stones songs: Zip Mouth Angel

Recorded: Sandymount Studios, Kildare, Ireland, July 9-Aug. 6 and Sept. 1993; Windmill Lane Studios, Dublin, Ireland, Nov. 3-Dec. 10 1993 (Voodoo Lounge Sessions)

From Martin Elliott’s book THE ROLLING STONES COMPLETE RECORDING SESSIONS 1962-2012:
Zip Mouth Angel has well worked upon lyrics. It’s a pretty soft rock song which features Mick Jagger on vocals and acoustic guitar. Charlie Watts is on drums, while any contribution that Keith Richards provides is on shaker and/or organ.

Zip Mouth Angel is a well-crafted track with thoughtful lyrics, showcasing a more mellow rock vibe. Mick Jagger takes the lead, not just with his signature vocals but also on acoustic guitar, adding a delicate touch to the song’s overall feel. Charlie Watts provides his steady, impeccable drumming, keeping the rhythm tight and fluid. Interestingly, Keith Richards’ role here is more subtle—rather than his usual guitar work, he contributes to the track by playing the shaker and possibly the organ.

The song’s restrained instrumentation allows the lyrics and melody to shine, creating an intimate and reflective atmosphere. Recorded during the Voodoo Lounge sessions in1993, Zip Mouth Angel stands out as an example of the band’s ability to explore softer, more introspective sounds while still maintaining their unmistakable identity. Though it didn’t make the final album, the track remains an intriguing piece from this creative period, offering a different side of the Stones’ dynamic range.

You can find the song in bootleg releases like Voodoo Stew, which features Keith Richards’ versions of most of the official songs of the album, plus a few unreleased tracks. The sound quality is fantastic, and the performances are raw, just the way a Stones record should be.
