About Bill Wyman’s album Bill Wyman (1981)
By 1981 Bill Wyman had finally nailed the perfect mix of rock & roll and his signature oddball humor, creating a surprisingly solid album with Bill Wyman. Unlike his previous solo efforts—ranging from the eccentric-but-inspired Monkey Grip in 1974 (the first solo album by a Rolling Stones member) to the just plain eccentric Stone Alone—this time, Wyman took a different approach. Instead of relying on an all-star lineup of guest musicians, he played most of the instruments himself, only bringing in a rhythm section and a few collaborators. The result? A crisp, well-balanced sound that blends the punch of classic rock & roll with the slick electronic edge of new wave.
What really makes Bill Wyman stand out is its catchy, well-crafted songs, packed with hooks and laced with Wyman’s signature dry humor. A New Fashion playfully skewers trend-chasing pop stars with an acidic bite, layering a melodic chorus over a minimalist electronic groove. Come Back Suzanne is a quirky rock/disco/new wave fusion, where crunching power chords meet dreamy synth flourishes, all wrapped around a tongue-in-cheek tale of lost love. Then there’s Jump Up, a lively mashup of ska and funk with carefree, party-ready lyrics, and Girls, a swaggering rocker that almost feels like a parody of the Stones’ many lust-driven anthems.
But the real standout is (Si Si) Je Suis Un Rock Star—a hilariously bizarre yet undeniably catchy track. Wyman delivers a deadpan vocal over a delightfully strange mix of Spanish guitars and bubbling synth disco, turning it into an instant earworm. Ultimately, Bill Wyman is an album for those who appreciate a little eccentricity in their rock & roll. With strong songwriting and sleek production, it’s a hidden gem for fans willing to embrace Wyman’s unique sense of humor.
