About The Rolling Stones in Santiago, Chile 1995

*By Marcelo Sonaglioni
The Rolling Stones’ arrival in Santiago, Chile, in February 1995, as part of their Voodoo Lounge Tour, was a significant cultural event for the country. It marked their first-ever performance in Chile (and last Latin American show of their Voodoo Lounge Tour before heading to South Africa) occurring during a period of transition and growing openness following years of political turmoil.  The concert took place at the Estadio Nacional, a venue with a complex history, having been used as a detention center during the Pinochet regime. This added a layer of historical significance to the event.  While expectations were higher, around 35,000 fans attended the concert. Despite not selling out, the event was considered a success and a memorable moment for Chilean rock fans.

While the Rolling Stones’ 1995 concert was a landmark event, Chile had a vibrant rock scene long before then. Chilean bands emerged in the late 50s/early 60s, influenced by American rock and roll. The ’60s saw a boom of Chilean rock with bands like Los Ramblers and Los Jaivas, blending rock with local influences. The Pinochet regime (1973-1990) heavily impacted the scene, with censorship and restrictions on rock music. Many musicians went into exile.

Despite restrictions, an underground rock scene persisted, with bands like Los Prisioneros becoming hugely popular in the ’80s, expressing social and political messages. The previous year, in 1994, Chile hosted its first Monsters of Rock festival, signaling a growing acceptance of large-scale international rock events. These events paved the way for the Rolling Stones’ arrival, their first visit there and their one show at the Estadio Nacional after many years of speculation demonstrating a strong and dedicated rock fanbase in Chile.
