Jagger Unfiltered: A Snapshot from 1978

In June 1978 Mick Jagger sat down for a no-holds-barred interview with Rolling Stone magazine at the height of Some Girls mania. The album had just been released weeks earlier and was already stirring controversy and praise alike. The Stones were riding a new wave of energy, blending disco, punk, and raw rock ‘n’ roll, and Jagger—sharp, sarcastic, and self-aware—was fully in command of the moment. The conversation captured him in rare form: guarded at times, brash at others, always enigmatic.

Riding the Some Girls High

Some Girls marked a pivotal comeback for The Rolling Stones, especially in the wake of punk rock challenging their reign. Jagger took this cultural shift head-on, embracing disco rhythms (Miss You), gritty New York narratives (Shattered), and biting satire (Some Girls, the song) During the interview, he addressed criticism over the album’s lyrics and sound, casually brushing it off with typical swagger. “People want you to stay the same, but that’s boring,” he said, making it clear that reinvention was part of the Stones’ DNA.

Fame, Sex, and Rolling with the Times

The interview also delved into Jagger’s views on fame, relationships, and aging as a rock icon. He reflected on the toll celebrity took, especially when it came to privacy and media scrutiny. He talked about being a father, navigating tabloids, and why he didn’t see himself as a spokesman for youth culture anymore. Still, he maintained that the band’s essence was intact.
