More about The Rolling Stones in 1980

*By Marcelo Sonaglioni
In 1980, The Rolling Stones released their 15th studio album, Emotional Rescue, on June 23. The album was recorded throughout 1979 in various studios, including Compass Point Studios in Nassau, Bahamas, and Pathé Marconi in Paris. It marked the band’s first release following Keith Richards’ exoneration from a Toronto drug charge that could have led to a lengthy prison sentence. The album showcased the band’s exploration of disco and funk influences, a continuation of the stylistic experimentation seen in their previous album, Some Girls.

Emotional Rescue topped the charts in several countries, including the United States and the United Kingdom. The title track became a significant hit, reaching No. 3 in the U.S. and No. 9 in the UK. Another notable single from the album, She’s So Cold also achieved considerable success. The recording sessions were highly productive, with several tracks left off the album later appearing on the 1981 release, Tattoo You. The album’s cover featured thermographic photos of the band members, aligning with the era’s experimental visual aesthetics. Despite the absence of a supporting tour, Emotional Rescue reinforced The Rolling Stones’ adaptability and sustained relevance in the evolving music landscape of the 1980s.
