Today in Rolling Stones history: June 23
*Click for DAILY ROLLING STONES CHRONOLOGY 1962-present
If you think your current job is high-pressure, imagine navigating the erratic energy of The Rolling Stones at their absolute peak of arena-filling excess. June 23 isn’t just a random date on a calendar; it’s a portal back to when the band was turning venues like Madison Square Garden into sweat-soaked temples of rock. It’s also the day the world finally got a taste of Emotional Rescue in 1980—a record that proved the band could still hustle, even when they were essentially operating on fumes and studio outtakes. From smoky London club roots to bloated stadium spectacles, the Stones lived more in twenty-four hours than most bands do in a lifetime.

June 23, 1980: Release of Emotional Rescue, the Stones’ 15th British and 17th American studio album
SIDE A: 1. Dance/ 2. Summer Romance/ 3. Send It To Me/ 4. Let Me Go/ 5. Indian Girl
SIDE B: 1. Where The Boys Go/ 2. Down In The Hole/ 3. Emotional Rescue/ 4. She’s So Cold/ 5. All About You
While critics often label Emotional Rescue as a mere, diluted imitation of the band’s 1978 album, Some Girls, a deeper listen reveals it to be a natural evolutionary step. But if you actually spin the record, it’s not just a rehash; it’s the band moving forward. After years of coasting on the reputation they built with Exile on Main St., the success of Some Girls finally kicked them into gear and made them actually work for it again. Sure, a lot of the album is made up of studio leftovers and tracks they threw together in a hurry, but it’s still the Stones at their most professional. Even the “filler” tracks like Summer Romance or the reggae-heavy Send It to Me have a swagger that makes the whole thing a guilty pleasure. While maybe only the title track and She’s So Cold are true classics, the whole record feels like a band that’s hungry again.
