The Rolling Stones in the press: “Stones Give Their Reactions To Album”
The Rolling Stones had barely arrived when suddenly everyone wanted to know what they thought of themselves. In May 1964, their debut album had shot up the British charts and even pushed The Beatles from the top spot, giving the young Stones an unusually good excuse to feel pleased with themselves. And pleased they were. Keith Richards, Mick Jagger, Brian Jones, Charlie Watts and Bill Wyman each offered their take on the record, revealing what mattered to them before fame, mythology and decades of hindsight complicated everything. Their answers are remarkably modest, confident and revealing—and a fascinating snapshot of The Rolling Stones before they became The Rolling Stones.
In one fantastic week the Rolling Stones’ LP came out of nowhere and knocked the Beatles from the place they had occupied at the top of the chart for months. Everyone suddenly sat up and took notice of the Stones.
What do the Stones themselves think of the album?
KEITH: I like it really, you know. I think it is good. It is something we have always wanted to do, to record these numbers, and I hope we’ll be proved right. The market is wide open.
CHARLIE: I like the way it sounds. I don’t think my contribution is all that fantastic, but the LP has got our sound. When I say it is very good, I mean we are pleased with the way it has turned out.
MICK: It’s the kind of stuff we like playing. I think the real r-and-b fans will know what we’re doing on it and even others should. We’ve tried to get the kind of sound we like and I think we’ve done that.
BRIAN: It is very good. That’s not just from my point of view because I happen to be on it, but because it reflects the Rolling Stones, which is what we intended to do. (Ref. The Rolling Stones 1964 Album)
BILL: It covers a big range of the type of music we play and we are very pleased with the end product.
