And how to keep it rolling! (by Mike Grant)

I asked lead guitarist Brian Jones whether he considers himself a rich man now. He had just bought a new Rolls Royce.

“Not yet,” smiled Brian, “but I’m working at it. I’ve just opened a chain of boutiques selling Swedish clothes, with another friend. I expect that to bring me in the kind of extra loot that Keith and Mick have been coining from their composing.”

A year ago the Stones might only have received £500 for a show but now they are paid £1,000 for a short 25 or 30 minute appearance. On European tours, like one recently in Stockholm, they were paid £3,000 for one concert. (Ref. The Rolling Stones Valentine 1967)

The Stones have made their money out of two things: Firstly by presenting exciting music in an exciting form and secondly by their status symbol of rebellion. The Stones and their management have quite deliberately built up a reputation for hell raising—a refusal to conform to the accepted pattern of social behaviour.

When Mick Jagger was slated by the national Press for propelling one young person’s posterior along the pavement after she had provoked a fight with his girlfriend Chrissie Shrimpton, many thought this publicity would harm the Stones.

One name critic even went so far as to call the Stones “animals and morons.” The Stones were delighted—they don’t need to be defended by the older generation.

“We expect to get the knocks,” said Keith. “We think we’ve got a right to say what we feel. If you kick authority in the teeth you might just as well use both feet.”

And so the Rolling Stones roll on from success to success—and nothing will stop them—except maybe old age! (Ref. The Rolling Stones Valentine 1967)
