Keith Richards, Blue Lena, and Rock ’n’ Roll Chaos

Few cars in rock history became as legendary as the blue Bentley S3 Continental owned by Keith Richards. Purchased in 1965 at the height of The Rolling Stones’ rise to fame, the luxurious car quickly turned into both a symbol of Richards’ lifestyle and a familiar sight throughout the band’s wild mid-1960s adventures. Keith famously nicknamed it Blue Lena inspired by legendary singer and actress Lena Horne. Over the years the Bentley became almost as iconic as Richards himself, representing equal parts elegance, rebellion, exhaustion, and rock ’n’ roll excess.

He later had the car fitted with a hidden compartment in order to hide the Stones’s illegal narcotics stash. “Having this car was already heading for trouble, breaking the rules of the establishment, driving a car I was definitely not born into“, Keith said in his 2010 biography Life. Blue Lena carried us on many an acid-filled journey.’’ The most notorious of those journeys occurred after authorities raided Richards’s home in 1967 while the guests were “high on various illegal substances.’

Following the raid, Richards faced charges for illegal drug possession. In preparation for his court appearance, Richards suggested the band take a trip to Marrakech, Morocco, where drug use was more tolerated. Mick Jagger and his then-girlfriend Marianne Faithfull flew there, while Richards made arrangements for Brian Jones, the band’s founder and original frontman, along with his girlfriend, model Anita Pallenberg, and friend Deborah Dixon, to drive to North Africa with him in Blue Lena. At that time, Jones and Pallenberg’s relationship was troubled. During the journey, Jones contracted pneumonia and had to stay in France for treatment, while Dixon fell ill and had to remain in Spain.

Love, Loss, and a Bentley: The Turbulent Ride of Blue Lena

Without anyone to mediate between them, Richards and Pallenberg began a relationship in the back seat of the car “somewhere between Barcelona and Valencia.” This relationship would endure for 23 years and produce three children. However, it also damaged Richards’ friendship with Jones, who spent the remainder of the trip to Marrakech in a drug-induced haze. The band eventually left him behind in Morocco. In 1976, Richards fell asleep at the wheel and crashed his Bentley into a tree, resulting in his nose hitting the dashboard with such force that it left a permanent indentation.

Blue Lena’s Comeback: From Rock ’n’ Roll Relic to Auction Star

In 1978 Richards sold the car, and it has since changed ownership multiple times. According to James Knight, Group Motoring Director at Bonhams, “Following a five-year restoration, Blue Lena has been returned to its former glory’. Knight also mentioned that the upcoming auction will be held in Chichester, West Sussex, near the location of the 1967 raid that significantly impacted the band’s history. At Bonhams’ Goodwood Revival Sale on September 12, 2015, a range of vehicles, including motor cars and airplanes, were auctioned to a crowd of eager bidders. Among them, a blue Bentley S3 Continental ‘Flying Spur’ sold for more than expected, bringing in a total of $1,186,133 for Blue Lena.
