Outlaws! Keith Richards and Ronnie Wood arrested in Fordyce, Arkansas 1975
*Click for MORE STONES ARTICLES
It was 1975 and two members of The Rolling Stones somehow managed to turn an ordinary American road trip into another chapter of accidental outlaw mythology. What began as a casual drive between tour dates for Keith Richards and Ronnie Wood quickly spiraled into the kind of small-town drama rock bands seemed magnetically attracted to during the seventies. The real mystery surrounding the Fordyce incident isn’t even the arrest itself—it’s the endless collection of conflicting stories that followed. Reckless driving, loud behavior, suspicious police attention… everybody seemed to have their own version. Decades later, that confusion only makes the story more fascinating, proving once again that with the Stones, even a lunch stop could somehow evolve into a half-true rock ’n’ roll legend wrapped in chaos, rumors, and Southern heat.

In 1975, the Rolling Stones performed a massive July 4th concert in Memphis to a crowd of 50,000. The next morning Keith Richards, Ron Wood, bodyguard Jim Callaghan and close friend Fred Sessler, who had been traveling with the band, rented a yellow Chevrolet Impala and decided to take the scenic route to their next show in Dallas. By 3:00 p.m. they stopped for a late lunch at the 4-Dice Restaurant in Fordyce. The restaurant’s sign, featuring four tumbling dice, might have caught Keith Richards’ attention, particularly because Tumbling Dice was a track from the Stones’ 1972 Exile on Main St. album.
A Pit Stop Turns Into Trouble: The Fordyce Incident Unfolds
Around 3:30 p.m., after savoring steaks and fried chicken while signing autographs for fans, the group piled back into the car and continued their journey. They drove onto the Fordyce Bypass, heading towards Camden. However, just before leaving Fordyce, they were stopped by city police officers Joe Taylor and Eddie Childers. The reasons for the stop were reported differently in the press. One account suggested that a waitress from the 4-Dice Restaurant had made a complaint, claiming the rock stars had been too loud and disruptive during their meal, causing a disturbance in the peaceful town. While the details varied across reports, the incident became a memorable moment in the Stones’ travels. The encounter with the police seemed more like an unwelcome interruption in their road trip, but it soon became another tale to add to the band’s legendary adventures.

A Rolling Stones 1975 Arrest: But What Really Prompted the Fordyce Stop?
Another version of the story suggests that a concerned motorist alerted the police, claiming that a car was driving aggressively and forcing other vehicles off the road. Alternatively, some reports claim that the Fordyce police stopped the car at the request of the State police, though this account lacks confirmation. Yet another story adds a different twist, stating that the Fordyce police noticed the car swerving erratically and decided to pull it over. Upon stopping the vehicle, the officers allegedly spotted a leather-sheathed hunting knife sitting on the seat next to the driver.
A Tangle of Tales: Arrest, Suspicion and Rock ‘n’ Roll Chaos
As a result, the driver was detained on suspicion of carrying a weapon, adding yet another layer of intrigue to the already chaotic situation. Each of these accounts provides a different perspective on the same event, illustrating the confusion and drama surrounding the Stones’ brief encounter with the law. Regardless of the exact reason for the stop, the incident remains a memorable part of the band’s history during their 1975 tour.
