Last February, while shaping up for the new No Filter Tour in the USA, originally planned for mid-year (which ended up being canceled for obvious reasons), Mick stated that he was also working on songs for the long-awaited new Stones studio album – which has been going on for about 4 years – but also dealing with an expanded reissue of the GOATS HEAD SOUP album, following the same path of extended releases that began with Exile On Main Street (2010), Some Girls (2011) and Sticky Fingers (2015), that is, remastered reissues of the original albums, with an extra second disc featuring unreleased studio stuff from each album’s recording sessions, and/or adding live takes. Last June, finally, Amazon Germany announced that the rumoured extended version of GHS could see the light in August (now to be out next September), but then no more details were added, both officially or unofficially. All this up to 3 days ago, when both the Stones’ Facebook and Twitter accounts posted a teaser of the song ‘Criss Cross’, which was originally recorded during the GHS sessions and previously unavailable, but yet quite popular among the Stones fans or researchers who knew it from assorted bootleg albums released through the years.Back in time, the Goats Head Soup recording sessions, which basically took place at Dynamic Sounds in Kingston, Jamaica in November-December 1972, later on finished at L.A.’s Village Recorder Studios between January and March 1973, and then at Island Recording Studios in May that year (produced by Jimmy Miller, with sound engineer Glyn Johns) spawned not only the 10 songs that ended up on the official album, but also a vast number of outtakes, all with a great selection of guests like Nicky Hopkins, Billy Preston, Bobby Keys, Jim Horn, Ray Cooper, Jim Price, Rebop, Pascal, Nicky Harrison, Chuck Finley, and Miller himself. Two of them, ‘Tops’ and ‘Waiting On A Friend’ (working title ‘Waiting For
A Friend’ and/or ‘Waiting On My Friend ‘), would not officially see the light until 1981 with the release of the Tattoo You album, while other songs like ‘Through the Lonely Nights’ would not be released before 1974 (eventually as the B-side of the ‘It’s Only Rock N’Roll (But I Like It)’ single), and 29 years later in the Rarities 1971-2003 compilation) The same goes for ‘Short and Curlies’, who finally made it to the It’s Only Rock N’Roll album. That said, the new expanded reissue of GOATS HEAD SOUP could leave some fans who hoped would include enough extra material from those ’72 and el ’73 sessions asking for more. And here’s why…
****WHAT YOU’LL GET on the ‘Rarities and Alternative Mixes’ disc (second disc issued besides the new remastered original GHS album):
Scarlet
Probably the most sought-after of all 10 outtakes, as this has never even made it to bootleg recordings. A Keith Richards-Jimmy Page collaboration, backed up by Stu on piano, Rick Grech (Traffic/Blind Faith) on bass and Bruce Rowland (of Fairport Convention) on drums. Strangely, the song wasn’t recorded during any of the 1972-1973 Goats Head Soup Sessions but in London in October 1974 (at Island Studios)
All The Rage
Second biggest surprise among the 10 extra tracks, as its title hasn’t even showed up in any lists of unreleased recordings. Or else it might also be any of the well-known session outtakes with a new name.
Criss Cross
Definitely the most popular of all GHS outtakes which once showed up in bootleg recordings, although under its original title (both ‘Criss Cross Man’, or ‘Save Me’) Back in the ’70s, it was part of the soundtrack of a weird Japanese movie called “Metamorphoses” (not to be confused with the “Metamorphosis” album) Looks like Mick hasn’t re-done the vocals (as he did with many of the Exile, Some Girls and Sticky Fingers outtakes included in the expanded versions of the albums)
100 Years Ago (Piano Demo)
Most likely to include new vocals by Mick.
Dancing With Mr. D (Instrumental)
Nothing to confirm until the album is finally out but, if only an instrumental version, I believe it could have been way more interesting if instead they chose to release the “live vocals” take used for the promo video of the song.
Heartbreaker (Instrumental)
Hopefully not just the original version without the vocals. To be confirmed.
Hide Your Love (Alternative Mix)
Most likely a version of the song that once showed up in an acetate with a slightly different mix from the original album version. Time will tell.
Dancing With Mr. D (Glyn Johns 1973 Mix)
To be confirmed.
Doo Doo Doo Doo Doo (Heartbreaker) – (Glyn Johns 1973 Mix)
Same as Dancing With Mr. D Glyn Johns 1973 Mix
Silver Train (Glyn Johns 1973 Mix)
Same as Dancing With Mr. D and Doo Doo Doo Doo Doo (Heartbreaker) Glyn Johns 1973 Mixes

Stones’ fans who won’t feel satisfied with the album lacking so many unreleased tracks (as described before) would still have the chance to relieve themselves by purchasing the Deluxe/ Super Deluxe versions of the new GOATS HEAD SOUP album which, besides the original record and the second disc with the 10 extra tracks, will include the legendary THE BRUSSELS AFFAIR takes (now remixed by Bob Clearmountain) recorded during the two shows at the Forest National Arena in Brussels, Belgium, on October 17, 1973.
