October 17 has The Rolling Stones serving up a little bit of everything: early British theatre dates, blues-soaked beginnings, stadium-sized spectacles, and the occasional backstage disaster. Their 1964 album 12 × 5 shows the band sharpening its American blues credentials, while Out of Tears reveals a more vulnerable side of Mick Jagger. Elsewhere, Mick Taylor revisits the blues with Carla Olson, Joss Stone joins the Miami show, and Johnny Depp hands Keith Richards a suitably outrageous award. Because apparently, even rock immortals need a trophy now and then.

October 17, 1964: Release of 12 X 5, the Stones’ second US album (London PS 402)

12 × 5 is the Stones’ second American studio album, expanding the five-track British EP Five by Five into a 12-song collection. Its title cleverly represents “twelve tracks performed by five musicians”, a mathematical solution to the American market’s growing appetite for British rock. Rooted in Chicago blues, rhythm and blues, and soul, the album captures the Stones sharpening their musical identity before original compositions began conquering the charts. At this stage, American blues remains their preferred weapon of choice.

October 17, 1973: Forest National, Brussels, Belgium, 2 shows (The Rolling Stones European Tour 1973)
According to Keith Richards, Bobby Keys failed to show up for the band’s assembly on the day of this concert because he was intoxicated. The incident reportedly led Mick Jagger to ban the saxophonist from future Rolling Stones tours, although Keys made occasional appearances with the band. His full-time return to the touring lineup came in 1989, restoring a musical partnership that had become an essential part of the Stones’ live sound.

October 17, 1990: Release of Carl Olson & Mick Taylor’s CD Live At Roxy
Recorded on March 4 of the same year at The Roxy Theatre in West Hollywood, Live at The Roxy, also known as Too Hot for Snakes, captures Olson and Taylor delivering a blues-rock performance. Drawn from the evening’s second set, the album showcases the musical chemistry between Olson, former leader of The Textones, and Taylor, whose expressive guitar playing brings bluesy intensity to the collaboration. A worthwhile document of Taylor’s post-Stones career, it puts the spotlight firmly on the music.

Out of Tears explores the emotional exhaustion left by a painful breakup, when heartbreak has drained the narrator of even the energy to cry. Yet beneath the sadness lies a quiet determination to survive, rebuild, and find a voice again. Mick Jagger wrote most of the track while sitting alone at a piano in Ronnie Wood’s home studio, creating a raw, vulnerable atmosphere that steps away from the Stones’ usual guitar-driven swagger in favor of understated emotional resilience.
