Everyone in town remembers the last hurricane/ Everyone in town hopes it doesn’t happen again…
Written by: Jagger/Richards
Recorded: Studio Guillaume Tell, Suresnes, France, May-June 2002
From The Complete Works website:
Since early November 2005 the Stones gave away a special one-track single at their US shows in exchange for a donation for a relief fund in aid of the victims of hurricane Katrina. It included this, a beautiful acoustic ballad sung by Keith, probably recorded in 2002 during the 40 Licks sessions, lasting for only one and a half minutes. The song was later included in the Keith Richards & The X-Pensive Winos compilation Vintage Winos, released in 2011.
Keith Richards: vocals and acoustic guitar
Ron Wood: slide acoustic guitar
Hurricane isn’t the first song that comes to mind when thinking about The Rolling Stones—but that’s exactly what makes it so compelling. Hidden beneath the band’s towering legacy of hits lies a track with a very different purpose, one shaped by urgency rather than chart ambition.
Created in response to Hurricane Katrina, this recording captures The Rolling Stones channeling their energy into something immediate and meaningful. It’s a reminder that even at the height of their legendary status, they remained connected to real-world events and willing to act through their music.
For listeners willing to dig a little deeper, Hurricane reveals a quieter side of the band’s story—one where artistry meets awareness. It may not dominate playlists, but its message and spirit continue to resonate in a way few songs can.

A song born from urgency and purpose
In the wake of Hurricane Katrina, when devastation swept across the southern United States, The Rolling Stones responded not with words alone but with sound. Hurricane, written and recorded in 2005, stands as a direct reflection of that moment—an artistic reaction shaped by empathy and action. Rather than chasing chart success, the band channeled their energy into something immediate and meaningful, contributing to relief efforts through music. This context gives the track its true weight: it is not just a recording, but a document of response. By stepping into a humanitarian role, The Rolling Stones reaffirmed their ability to stay culturally relevant while addressing real-world crises. Hurricane may not dominate headlines in their vast catalog, but its origin story gives it a resonance that extends far beyond the studio.
Musical identity and texture
At its core Hurricane is driven by a rich instrumental foundation rooted in blues and rock traditions, where the arrangement feels organic and unforced, allowing each element to breathe while contributing to a cohesive whole. Keith Richards delivers his unmistakable guitar work, weaving riffs that feel both rugged and expressive, while Ronnie Wood’s slide guitar adds a fluid, almost conversational layer that enhances the track’s depth.
Legacy and quiet significance
Unlike many of their globally recognized hits, Hurricane exists outside the traditional framework of commercial releases, and its purpose reshapes how it is heard, shifting attention away from popularity toward intention and execution. This distinction gives the track a different kind of weight within The Rolling Stones’ body of work, allowing it to stand apart as something more reflective and purposeful. Though it never reached iconic status, Hurricane occupies a meaningful space in their discography, highlighting their willingness to use music as a vehicle for social impact. In doing so, it reinforces their enduring connection to the world beyond entertainment, where artistry and awareness meet.
