Today in Rolling Stones history: March 21
*Click for DAILY ROLLING STONES CHRONOLOGY 1962-present
Rock history has a way of circling back on itself, and March 21 is a perfect snapshot of that rhythm. From early British scenes to the swagger of Faces unveiling First Step in 1970, the date captures artists finding their identity in real time. With Rod Stewart’s gritty voice and Ronnie Wood’s raw guitar work, the album set a loose, soulful tone that still resonates. Decades later, The Rolling Stones carried that same spirit onto massive stages, proving that rock evolution never really stops—it just gets louder.

The Faces burst onto the scene in 1970 with First Step, their debut album packed with raw energy, bluesy grooves, and that signature loose, boozy vibe. With Rod Stewart’s unmistakable raspy vocals and Ronnie Wood’s killer guitar work, the band delivered a mix of rock and roll swagger and laid-back jams. Tracks like Flying and Three Button Hand Me Down showed off their soulful side, while their rough-around-the-edges approach set them apart from the polished rock of the time. Though not as well-known as their later work, First Step laid the foundation for the Faces’ legendary sound—a mix of barroom rock, blues, and pure fun. You can hear the chemistry between the band members, fresh off their Small Faces days, finding their groove. If you love raw, unfiltered rock with a good-time feel, this album is worth a spin.
