The opening night of The Rolling Stones’ Voodoo Lounge Tour took place on August 1, 1994, at RFK Stadium in Washington, D.C. This highly anticipated event marked the beginning of one of the band’s most successful tours, supporting their 1994 album Voodoo Lounge. The tour was notable not only for its elaborate stage design and production but also for being the Stones’ first major outing without bassist Bill Wyman, who had retired from the band. His replacement, Darryl Jones, made his live debut with the group on this memorable night.
The show opened with the powerful riff of Not Fade Away, setting the tone for an electrifying evening. The setlist spanned the Stones’ extensive catalog, including classics like Jumpin’ Jack Flash, Satisfaction and Brown Sugar, as well as many new tracks from Voodoo Lounge, such as You Got Me Rocking, I Go Wild, The Worst and Love Is Strong. Fans were treated to a well-balanced mix of timeless hits and fresh material, showcasing the band’s ability to evolve while staying true to their roots.
The stage design featured massive props, pyrotechnics, and a striking voodoo-themed aesthetic, perfectly complementing the tour’s name and the album’s edgy vibe. Mick Jagger commanded the stage with his signature charisma and energy, while Keith Richards and Ron Wood delivered masterful guitar work. Charlie Watts anchored the performance with his impeccable drumming, maintaining the groove that has defined the Stones’ sound for decades.
The Voodoo Lounge Tour would go on to become one of the highest-grossing tours of the era, reaffirming The Rolling Stones’ status as the ultimate live rock ‘n’ roll band. Opening night in Washington, D.C., set the standard for what would become a legendary journey across the globe, thrilling fans and critics alike.
