Some dates in The Rolling Stones timeline quietly change everything, while others arrive with stadium lights, surprise collaborations, and a few gloriously unexpected detours. August 1 happens to deliver both. From Brian Jones taking his first steps into London’s buzzing music scene to the chaotic charm of the Edith Grove flat, the day traces the band’s evolution long before the headlines caught up. Add major tour launches, memorable concerts, and side projects with artists like Ray Charles, Herbie Mann, and Wingless Angels, and you’ve got proof that the Stones rarely spent a summer sitting still. Apparently, vacations were never really their thing.

Early August, 1959: Brian Jones arrives in London, eager to immerse himself in the city’s thriving music scene, where jazz, blues, and rhythm and blues are rapidly gaining popularity. Before long, he begins performing with several local jazz bands, sharpening his skills as a guitarist and multi-instrumentalist while building connections with like-minded musicians. These early experiences prove invaluable, laying the foundation for the musical vision and relationships that would soon lead to the formation of The Rolling Stones.

August 1962: Mick Jagger and Brian Jones move into a modest flat at 102 Edith Grove in London’s Chelsea district, a place that soon becomes a gathering spot for aspiring musicians. Keith Richards joins them shortly afterward, and the shared apartment quickly turns into an important early base for the Stones.

Despite its title, the album leans more toward jazz, R&B, and pop than reggae. Featuring Herbie Mann, Mick Taylor, Albert Lee, Pat Rebillot and Tommy McCook’s band, it delivers energetic, danceable interpretations of well-known songs, highlighted by an extended 18-minute jam on My Girl

Ray Charles shines in this collection of powerful live performances spanning his remarkable career. Ray Charles: The Legend Lives On is available as a 3-CD box set featuring 45 signature songs, including I Got a Woman, as well as a concert video. While it received little contemporary critical attention, it is widely regarded as a solid retrospective showcasing some of Charles’ finest R&B and soul performances.

August 1, 2010: Release of the (download only) Wingless Angels’ album Wingless Angels II, with Keith as guest
Wingless Angels II expands on the spirit of the original 1997 release, blending traditional Jamaican Rastafarian chants with deep rhythms and subtle contributions from Keith Richards. Rooted in a friendship that began in Jamaica during the early 1970s, the album captures an authentic, spiritual atmosphere. Produced by Brian Jobson, it enhances the group’s natural sound without losing its intimacy, while guests including Lisa Fischer, Bernard Fowler, Steve Jordan, Lee Jaffe and Lili Haydn add tasteful touches. Richards’ understated guitar work complements rather than dominates the music, resulting in a heartfelt recording driven by sincerity, tradition, and soul.
