The Rolling Stones and a Night of Pop Legends at the 1964 NME Poll Winners Concert

On April 26 1964 the Empire Pool in Wembley became the epicenter of pop music history, hosting what was rightly called “the greatest array of pop talent in the world.” The lineup was nothing short of iconic: The Beatles, The Rolling Stones (in their recap the NME famously wrote that The Stones could “hardly be heard above the shouts”), Cliff Richard, and even a virtual appearance by Elvis Presley. Though unable to attend in person, Presley sent a heartfelt recorded message, congratulating the winners and thanking the audience for including him.

The energy inside the venue was absolutely electric, buzzing with excitement from the very first note. When The Rolling Stones took the stage, they were almost completely drowned out by the deafening roar of their fans, who couldn’t contain their sheer excitement. Every riff and beat was met with wild cheers and screams. But the madness didn’t stop there—when The Beatles appeared, the frenzy somehow reached an even higher level. Paul McCartney tried to introduce Twist And Shout, but his words were completely swallowed up by a hurricane of stamping, crying, cheering, and non-stop screaming. It was pure chaos in the best way possible. That night, the sound of the crowd was as unforgettable and legendary as the performances themselves, creating a moment in rock history that would never be repeated.

The Beautiful Chaos of the NME Poll Winners Concerts in the ’60s

The NME Poll Winners Concerts in the ’60s were pure rock ‘n’ roll chaos. Held at Wembley’s Empire Pool, they brought together the biggest names of the decade—The Beatles, The Rolling Stones, Dusty Springfield, The Animals, and more—all in one place. Fans screamed so loud you could barely hear the bands play! Elvis even sent a message once when he couldn’t make it. These shows weren’t just concerts; they were wild, history-making moments where British rock exploded into full force. If you were lucky enough to be there, you saw music history in the making. (Ref.
