The Rolling Stones in Milano 1967 (by Eugenio Finardi, from the La Repubblica newspaper, April4 2007)
They sold out both shows, with five thousand paying spectators (ticket cost: 1000 lire). And in other cities, Bologna on April 5, Rome on the 6th and Genoa on the 9th, they also gathered a large number of fans, despite the newspaper headlines that, only a few weeks earlier, after clashes between the police and the public that occurred during their concerts in Helsingborg and Vienna, announced possible scuffles.
“Everything went smoothly,” recalls Eugenio Finardi, who, at the time seventeen, attended the afternoon show. “There weren’t even many police. The concert started at 4 pm and when they went on stage there was an incredible roar. I watched the first part of the show from the stands, but then I managed to make my way and get to within a few meters of the stage. Jagger was my idol and I wanted to see him up close at all costs. At the end I even started to cry. I still have a rose petal that Mick threw into the audience at one point.”
Milan was the headquarters for the entire Italian tour. The Stones arrived at Linate on a scheduled flight from Vienna on the morning of April 4. Jagger was searched at customs because of his arrest in February 1967 for possession of drugs.
“But very few people believed that the Stones were the criminals they were said to be. Beatles or Rolling Stones, for us the music was what mattered most.” For those concerts the support groups were Stormy Six, New Trolls and Al Bano.
