Today in Rolling Stones history: April 5

April 5 marks a series of key dates in The Rolling Stones timeline, moving from early UK theatre shows in Ipswich (1964) to larger European stages like Bologna in 1967, during their last tour with Brian Jones. By the 1990s, the scale had shifted to stadium tours, including Australia and a 1998 stop in Buenos Aires featuring Bob Dylan. The same date later appears in 2006 in Japan, reflecting how their touring patterns expanded globally over time.
April 5, 1964: Gaumont Theatre, Ipswich, England (2 shows)

April 5, 1966: K.B. Hallen, Copenhagen, Denmark (2 shows)

April 5, 1967: Palazzo Dello Sport, Bologna, Italy (2 shows)
The Rolling Stones’ 1967 European tour was wild, stylish, and historic — their final run with Brian Jones in the lineup. Kicking off in March, the tour hit countries like Germany, France, Sweden, and Poland, where they became the first Western rock band to play behind the Iron Curtain. The band was in full psychedelic swing, with mod fashion, flower power vibes, and a setlist that still leaned into their R&B roots while hinting at their evolving sound. Brian, though visibly struggling with his health and legal issues, was still a magnetic presence on stage, often switching between guitar, harmonica, and even the dulcimer. The tour had its chaotic moments — screaming fans, police barriers, and some tense backstage scenes — but it was also a turning point. After this, the Stones wouldn’t tour Europe again until 1970, and by then, Brian was gone. 1967 truly marked the end of an era.
