Also known as ‘Let’s Go Steady’, ‘She Left Me’ Written by: J.W. Alexander Recorded: Compass Point Studios, Nassau, Bahamas, Jan. 18-Feb. 12 1979 Guest musicians: Chrissy Kimsey (backing vocals), Bobby Keys (sax)
From Martin Elliott’s book THE ROLLING STONES COMPLETE RECORDING SESSIONS 1962-2012: A classic outtake featuring a ‘one-sided duet’ between Keith Richards an Chrissy Kimsey on this James Alexander penned Sam Cooke tune. It’s a splendid ballad full of soulful ramblings. Chrissy Kimsey is the wife of Producer Chris Kimsey. Later that year it would be played live as part of the New Barbarians setlist.
The recording sessions for the Emotional Rescuealbum took place in late 1979 and early 1980 at the Pathe Marconi Studios outside Paris, France. The album marked a shift in the band’s sound, incorporating more elements of dance, disco, and reggae music. During the sessions, the band members were experimenting with new musical styles and influences, with all five band members contributing to the album’s creation.
In fact they were so productive that several tracks left off the album would form the core of the follow-up, 1981’s Tattoo You(“Hang Fire”, “Little T&A” and “No Use in Crying”), while “I Think I’m Going Mad”, another song from the sessions, was released as the B-side to “She Was Hot” in 1984. A cover song sung by Richards, “We Had It All” was released on the 2011 deluxe Some Girlspackage. Overall, the album sessions were a significant period for The Rolling Stones as they continued to evolve and adapt their sound to fit the changing musical landscape of the late 1970s and early 1980s.
