Dec. 16, 1974: Mick Taylor announces he’s leaving The Rolling Stones. The guitarist went on to cut a run of classic Stones albums — Let It Bleed, Sticky Fingers, Exile on Main St., Goats Head Soup and It’s Only Rock ’n Roll. His fluid, melodic style added a whole new dimension to the band, which until then leaned heavily on the tight, rhythmic push and pull between Brian Jones and Keith Richards. Still, Taylor never felt completely at ease as a Rolling Stone. He was younger, not an original member, and often sensed he wasn’t being pushed or used anywhere near his true potential. “I could write a book about that. From the moment I joined John Mayall, right up until 1974, I’d been working all the time”, Taylor pointed out. “I was completely used to either being in the studio or being on the road. If it wasn’t with the Stones, it was with somebody else. I just needed a break”
