August 18 has produced some wonderfully unpredictable moments in The Rolling Stones’ history. In 1963, the band played two London shows on the same day, while a year later they took their early rhythm-and-blues attack to Guernsey. In 1967, We Love You and Dandelion arrived together in England, pairing psychedelic defiance with whimsical fantasy. Two years later, Mick Jagger was accidentally shot in the hand while filming Ned Kelly in Australia—a production already complicated by Marianne Faithfull’s withdrawal. Decades later came Prague with Václav Havel, the Bridges to Babylon announcement in New York, and major shows from the A Bigger Bang and No Filter tours.

August 18, 1967: Release of the We Love You / Dandelion 7″ single in England (Decca F 12654)
We Love You was the Stones’ psychedelic response to their highly publicized drug arrests. Written by Mick Jagger and Keith Richards, the song thanked loyal fans for their support while also taking a playful, defiant jab at the media and the legal establishment.
As for Dandelion, also penned by Mick and Keith and featuring backing vocals from John Lennon and Paul McCartney, blends nursery-rhyme imagery with whimsical characters, it creates a colorful, carefree fantasy world. The dandelion becomes a symbol of nature, transformation, resilience, and the fleeting spirit of the Summer of Love.

August 18, 1969: Mick Jagger gets accidentally shot in the hand while filming Ned Kelly in Australia. In fact the film had to go through lots of issues: Marianne Faithfull (Mick’s girlfriend at the time, as we know) had also gone to Australia to play the lead female role in the movie (Maggie, Ned’s sister), but their relationship was already coming to and end and she had an overdose of sleeping tablets soon after her arrival, which led to her being hospitalised in a coma, and pulling out of the film.

August 18, 1997: After driving across the Brooklyn Bridge in New York City in a red Cadillac, The Rolling Stones hold a memorable press conference to officially announce their massive 1997–1998 Bridges to Babylon Tour. The event marks the beginning of another major chapter in the band’s long-running career, with the tour set to take them to stadiums and arenas around the world.
