One minute the band is stirring enough controversy for politicians to rewrite the rules, the next they’re delivering unforgettable concerts, surprise club gigs, and unlikely studio collaborations. Throw in Keith Richards lending his unmistakable guitar to Sheryl Crow’s Eye to Eye, and you’ve got a date that refuses to stay in one lane. If you think Rolling Stones history follows a predictable script, July 19 is here to prove otherwise—loudly, and with plenty of unexpected detours.

July 19, 1964: Hippodrome, Brighton, England (2 shows)

July 19, 1966: Pacific International Exhibition Forum, Vancouver, Canada (The Rolling Stones American Tour 1966)
The police tried to ban the Stones from ever returning to Vancouver, but the City Council rejected the idea and instead passed an “anti-riot” bylaw aimed at reducing the chaos surrounding major rock concerts. The Rolling Stones would return to the city in 1972. While the concert itself was considerably calmer than their infamous 1966 appearance, a major riot still erupted outside the venue after the show, proving that the city’s turbulent relationship with the band was far from over.

July 19, 1985: Keith Richards joins Tom Waits on three tracks during he recording sessionsof Waits’ future album Rain Dogs at Quadrasonic Studio, New York City.
Tom Waits on Keith: “Keith is such a strong personality. A completely intuitive musician. He moves like an animal. (mimes the moving gestures of a panther) Gosh, he is just pure theater – standing in the middle of a room and putting on his guitar and turning on his amp. All his stuff is irregular. He’s a killer, man. A great spirit. Like a pirate. He’s a complete gentleman.”

July 19, 1994: RPM Club, Toronto, Canada (surprise warm-up gig for the Voodoo Lounge Tour) This also marks the Stones’ first ever public performance with Darryl Jones on bass.
