Some dates in The Rolling Stones timeline refuse to stay in one lane. July 13 somehow manages to squeeze in firsts, farewells, surprise reunions, marathon concerts, and even the birth of Brown Sugar on the other side of the world. One minute Mick Jagger is pretending to be an outlaw in Australia, the next Keith Richards is casually hinting at the future with Ron Wood, while stadium crowds keep piling up from Detroit to Hyde Park. If rock history had a habit of overachieving, this day would be the perfect example. Turns out, the calendar occasionally knows how to steal the spotlight too.

July 13, 1963: Outlook Club, Middlesborough, England (first Stones’ show outside London ever)

July 13, 1969: Mick Jagger is in Australia filming his role in Ned Kelly, Tony Richardson’s movie about the infamous 19th-century Australian outlaw. The shoot keeps him there until September 1969, far from the rest of the band during one of the most turbulent periods in Rolling Stones history. But the downtime proves remarkably productive: while staying in Australia, Jagger writes Brown Sugar, reportedly sketching out the song between filming sessions in the countryside—a composition that would go on to become one of the Stones’ biggest and most controversial classics.

July 13, 1972: Cobo Hall, Detroit, Michigan, USA (The Rolling Stones American Tour 1972)

July 13-14, 1974: Keith Richards joins Ron Wood’s band for a surprise appearance during Ronnie’s solo concerts (“Woody and Friends”) at the Kilburn Gaumont State Theatre in London, giving the audience an early glimpse of a partnership that would soon become central to The Rolling Stones. The entire concert was professionally recorded and later released as The First Barbarians – Live From Kilburn on CD and DVD in 2007.

Mick as a solo artist with guest star Tina Turner, while Keith and Ronnie show up at the end of the show with Bob Dylan.

The result is a standout German-language blues record that blends Kramer’s songwriting with performances from some of the genre’s most respected artists.
