July 11, 1989: After boarding a train in The Bronx, the Stones arrive at New York City’s Grand Central Terminal to hold a packed press conference announcing the North American leg of their 1989 Steel Wheels Tour. Surrounded by hundreds of journalists, photographers, and fans, Mick Jagger unveils the band’s brand-new single, Mixed Emotions, playing it for the first time on a portable ghetto blaster. The unusual launch generates huge excitement and marks the beginning of the Stones’ highly anticipated return to the road after seven years without touring.
Keith, during the press conference: “We’re doing it for the glory, darling, the glory.”
