June 20, 1980: Release of the Emotional Rescue / Down in the Hole 7″ single (Rolling Stones Records RSR 105)
Emotional Rescue didn’t just arrive—it slipped into the band’s catalog like a curveball. Built on a pulsing groove and Mick Jagger’s unexpected falsetto, the song traded guitar-driven swagger for a sleeker, dancefloor-ready sound, signaling one of the group’s boldest stylistic shifts.

As for the B-side, the Stones drew deeply from the blues throughout their career, and Down in the Hole stands as one of their strongest tributes. Once again inspired by the blues masters, the track combines Mick Jagger’s probing lyrics, Sugar Blue’s sharp harmonica, and a haunting atmosphere.
