Today in Rolling Stones history: June 19
*Click for DAILY ROLLING STONES CHRONOLOGY 1962-present
June 19 in The Rolling Stones universe is one of those dates that refuses to behave, bouncing from early club gigs to stadium chaos and even the occasional gardening society detour. Some days they’re tearing through America on tour, other days they’re in Stuttgart or Chicago proving why Mick Jagger still owns the stage when Jumpin’ Jack Flash kicks in. Meanwhile, Bill Wyman quietly joins the Royal Horticultural Society, because of course a Rolling Stone might also prefer soil over spotlight when not holding down the low end. That’s June 19: rock history with unexpected plot twists every single time.

June 19, 1967: Bill Wyman joins the Royal Horticultural Society. At the height of The Rolling Stones’ rise, the band’s bassist was already known for having interests far beyond music. Wyman had a deep fascination with gardening and plants, and his membership in the RHS reflected that quieter, more private side of his life. While the Stones were dominating stages and headlines with their raw rock energy, Wyman was also cultivating a very different passion, rooted in patience, observation, and nature rather than performance and chaos.

After leaving the Stones in late 1992-early 1993 Bill Wyman didn’t stop making music, but he stepped back from it for a while. About ten years later he formed The Rhythm Kings, a loose group of veteran musicians including Gary Brooker, Georgie Fame, and Andy Fairweather-Low. However, he didn’t release a full solo album until 2015’s Back to Basics. The title reflects its relaxed, roots-oriented approach, with original songs that shuffle and drift rather than drive hard. Wyman’s voice sounds breathy, worn, and rough, and he openly accepts its limits, just as he embraces some dated synth textures. The album feels intentionally unhurried, like an excuse to enjoy playing casually with friends. It’s less about urgency and more about comfort, a vibe-driven record from a seasoned musician playing for pleasure rather than necessity.
