Today in Rolling Stones history: June 24
*Click for DAILY ROLLING STONES CHRONOLOGY 1962-present
June 24th has always been a strange, high-octane blur for The Rolling Stones, acting less like a calendar date and more like a chaotic masterclass in rock ‘n’ roll survival. Whether it’s the band turning a yacht into a floating, smoke-filled circus or Mick Jagger ditching his bandmates to warble The Wild Colonial Boy for a cinematic flop, the archives are packed with these bizarre, beautiful detours. From sweaty nights at the Ken Colyer Club to conquering Madison Square Garden, the history is relentless. Forget the neat narrative; we’re diving into the messy, glorious snapshots of a band that never stopped moving.

June 24, 1965: Messehallen Skoyen, Oslo, Norway (2 shows, 2nd Scandinavian Tour)

June 24, 1966: The Stones turn a routine press conference into a spectacle aboard the S.S. Sea Panther in New York. Amidst the harbor breeze and cigarette smoke, a young Linda McCartney (at the time, Linda Eastman) captured the band, framing the rebellious icons against the city in an unforgettable, historic snapshot.

June 24, 1970: Release of the Ned Kelly movie soundtrack, with Mick on lead vocals on one song: The Wild Colonial Boy
Although critics panned the Tony Richardson-directed Ned Kelly—Mick Jagger’s second film role—the soundtrack remains a hidden treasure for Rolling Stones completists. It features Jagger’s haunting folk performance of The Wild Colonial Boy, though the rest of the album consists of lackluster country tracks by Shel Silverstein, performed by a pre-fame Waylon Jennings and Kris Kristofferson. Despite the mundane songs, the Rykodisc reissue is worth noting for its excellent packaging and comprehensive historical liner notes.
