Filmed by the Maysles brothers for the upcoming movie Gimme Shelter. Before the Rolling Stones even hit the stage, Jimi Hendrix dropped by backstage on his 27th birthday, later watching the gig tucked behind Keith Richards’ speaker stack. The album born from these shows—recorded by Glyn Johns in Baltimore and New York—was originally planned as a double set featuring BB King and Ike & Tina Turner. But Decca shut it down, clueless about the guests. Mick eventually scrapped the idea, sparking frustration, later restored in the 40th-anniversary edition. Afterwards Mick attended a birthday party for Hendrix.
