Musician Damon Albarn, frontman and main lyricist of Blur and later on co-creator and primary musical contributor of the Gorillaz virtual band has slammed the Stones not once, not twice, but actually three times. Speaking to French magazine Les Inrockuptibles, London-born Albarn first seemed particularly upset that the group used the “Hackney” district name to promote their project. “That really irritated me. Because my family lives in Hackney and the way they showed up in the Hackney Empire theater freaked me out,” he pointed out. “They never did anything at Hackney, they didn’t play there, they didn’t contribute anything. They just showed up”.
He then continued aiming at the Stones’ Hackney Diamonds lead single “Angry” after thinking that the video “targeted” 26-year-old actress Sydney Sweeney, adding that her clips (where the actress poses on top of a moving classic car and shows off some close-ups of her shiny leather corset top), combined with the Stones footage were “completely disconnected”. ‘I listened to their new song and watched this horrible music video showing them at different stages of their lives on billboards”, Albarn said.
He summed up his “anger” by telling Les Inrockuptibles that “I love the idea of dedicating your life to one thing, in search of the sublime. But the truth is that they have become worse. Worse to persist in remaining themselves. This is something I don’t understand. Making the exact same music, just not as good. There must be no joy in doing such a thing. They’ve never been anything other than the Rolling Stones’ ”. He even suggested that as the band got older and continued to perform, the band “got worse,” adding that doing what they did “must be no joy”.
According to the Daily Mail, “This isn’t the first time Damon has hit out at the Stones. In a 2022 interview with the Los Angeles Times, the singer was asked about a future Blur reunion, with the reporter commenting that he’d ‘always seemed somewhat reluctant to go out and play the hits.’ Damon said at the time, ‘I’m not into how beloved you become of the smell of your own farts. ‘The greatest exponent of that is the Rolling Stones, who just couldn’t let it go. It’s disappointing. ‘Not to say that I didn’t absolutely love the Rolling Stones in their heyday — they were magnificent. But do other stuff in your life. Singing (I Can’t Get No) Satisfaction when you’re pushing 80? Come on.’
