Recorded during the Some Girls sessions in 1978, Follow You is an unreleased instrumental track that captures the Rolling Stones experimenting with a funky groove. The song rides on a rhythm reminiscent of Shame, Shame, Shame by Shirley & Company, blending a tight, danceable beat with the band’s signature swagger.
While it never developed into a full-fledged song with lyrics, it stands out as a glimpse into the Stones’ creative process at the time. The Some Girls era was defined by a mix of rock, punk, disco, and funk influences, and this outtake leans into the latter. The rhythm section drives the track forward with a steady, infectious pulse, while Keith Richards and Ron Wood add sharp, choppy guitar licks, reinforcing the song’s upbeat and playful nature.
Clocking in at just under two minutes, it feels more like a jam than a structured composition, suggesting it may have been a rough idea that the band never fully pursued. It shares similarities with other instrumental outtakes from the era, such as Munich Hilton or Dancing Girls, showcasing the Stones’ tendency to lay down loose grooves that sometimes evolved into finished tracks—or simply remained buried in the vaults.
Though it never saw an official release, Follow You adds to the treasure trove of unreleased material from the Some Girls sessions. The track serves as another example of the band’s ability to channel different musical styles effortlessly, even in their raw, unfinished sketches. Fans of the Stones’ funkier side will appreciate its infectious groove, making it a hidden gem among the band’s extensive archive of lost recordings.
