Today in Rolling Stones history: April 12
*Click for DAILY ROLLING STONES CHRONOLOGY 1962-present
April 12 reveals the Rolling Stones story in motion—raw beginnings, global domination, and enduring legacy. In 1964, a hungry young band ignited Croydon with rebellious energy just days before their debut album dropped. By 1995, they were commanding massive stadium crowds in Australia, proving their evolution from gritty upstarts to rock giants. Decades later, that spirit still echoes, from surprise onstage moments to archival releases like Ronnie Wood’s Live At Electric Ladyland. It’s a date that captures transformation in real time, showing how the Stones didn’t just ride rock history—they continuously reshaped it across generations and continents.
April 12, 1964: Fairfield Halls, Croydon, England (2 shows)
On April 12, 1964 the Rolling Stones performed at Fairfield Halls in Croydon as part of their second UK tour that year. This was the final date of the package tour organized by Don Arden, which featured a lineup of popular British acts of the time. Alongside the Stones were The Swinging Blue Jeans, The Mojos, John Leyton and Mike Berry, among others. The Stones were rising stars then, with their debut album set for release just two days later. Their raw energy and rebellious image made them stand out from the polished pop acts on the bill. The Croydon show captured the early excitement of the British beat boom and the Stones’ growing dominance in rock and roll.

From the 1960s to 1995 the Rolling Stones built a lasting connection with Australian audiences. Their first visit came in 1965 during a tour that included New Zealand, where screaming fans greeted the band at every stop. They returned in 1973 for a legendary tour marked by raw performances and backstage chaos. Despite a planned 1976 tour being canceled, the Stones came back strong in 1982 with their first stadium shows in Australia. The Voodoo Lounge Tour in 1995 brought them to massive crowds once again, proving their enduring popularity. Across the decades, Australian fans embraced the Stones’ evolving sound—from bluesy roots to polished rock—cementing their place as icons in the country’s live music history.
