April 24-May 1967: Brian, Keith and Anita meet up in Cannes, France for the premiere of director Volker Schlöndorf’s movie Mord und Totschlag (A Degree of Murder, starring Anita, with original soundtrack by Brian)
A Degree of Murder (1967) is a West German film directed by Volker Schlöndorff and starring Anita Pallenberg, then romantically linked to Brian Jones. Brian composed the film’s moody, experimental soundtrack—his only solo scoring effort—using instruments like the Mellotron, sitar, and dulcimer. The music perfectly complements the film’s surreal tone. Though Jones didn’t appear in the film, his influence is deeply felt. Pallenberg’s performance, combined with Jones’s haunting score, creates a unique cinematic experience. The film remains a cult piece, offering a rare glimpse into Jones’s artistic capabilities beyond the Stones.

Backed by a tight band featuring Rolling Stones bassist Bill Wyman, the performance captures the raw energy and chemistry between the two Chicago blues giants. Buddy’s searing guitar licks and Junior’s gritty vocals and harmonica blend perfectly in this explosive set. The album includes powerful versions of blues staples like Hoochie Coochie Man and Messin’ with the Kid. It’s a must-listen for fans of electric blues, showcasing both artists at their peak on stage.
