August 28 is hardly a quiet date in Rolling Stones history. From a Brian-less early gig and a Cleveland show featuring Lenny Kravitz to Keith Richards picking a fight with a Swedish critic, the day offers plenty of evidence that Stones history rarely behaves itself. Add Ronnie Wood’s collaboration with Ronnie Lane, a later European stadium appearance, Ottawa during the A Bigger Bang era, and suddenly one date becomes a surprisingly crowded chapter. There are concerts, recordings, arguments and unexpected connections—all packed into August 28, because apparently the Rolling Stones never learned how to have an uneventful day.

August 28, 1998: Release of Ron Wood & Ronnie Lane’s CD Mahoney’s Last Stand, incl. five previously unreleased tracks that weren’t included in the 1976 LP version: 1. Insurance/ 2. Just Another Honky/ 3. Anymore For Anymore/ 4. Flags And Banners/ 5. My Fault
Originally released in September 1976, Mahoney’s Last Stand serves as the soundtrack to the 1972 Canadian film, created by former Faces bandmates Ron Wood and Ronnie Lane. Most tracks are recorded at Olympic Studios in 1972, but label problems postpone the album’s release for four years.

August 28, 2007: Keith Richards writes a letter to the Swedish press asking for a retraction of a negative review of the Stones’ concert in Gotheburg on August 3: “That was a prick, you know. The guy’s got a hard-on against me and I decided to answer him – just told hiim to shut his gob or I’d run his man out of town. It was just so unnecessary, and so untrue, and I’m looking at all the other reviews of the same show and they’re all totally the opposite, and I’m thinking, Hell, this guy, I know him. I don’t know. Maybe I screwed his old lady…

…I don’t care what shit they say about me personally, but when you knock the band, up comes the shield and the sword comes out, and there’s St. George, know what I mean? Hey, how many times have I been trashed, man? Shit, I’m the expert at it. I just decided to let this one have it. He’s only a Swede, after all. He’s not even a turnip, is he?… I mean, I could have had him shot.”

August 28, 2007: Release of Pereza’s CD Aproximaciones, with Mick Taylor as guest on two tracks: 1. Grupis/ 2. Superhermanas
Aproximaciones is the acclaimed studio album by Spanish rock duo Pereza, Leiva and Rubén Pozo. Blending energetic rock, acoustic textures, and strong 1970s influences, the record stands out for its infectious melodies and richly crafted classic-rock sound, becoming one of the group’s major hits.
