August 10 has a habit of making The Rolling Stones’ history look anything but predictable. From early Birmingham shows in 1963 to Ronnie Wood’s solo adventures, strange record sleeves, surprise club gigs, and Keith Richards wandering into Lee ‘Scratch’ Perry’s dub universe, the date connects some wonderfully unexpected dots. There are intimate performances, unusual collaborations, releases that deserve a second look, and one Toronto night in 2005 when the Stones traded stadium scale for a packed club. Even Out of Control gets its own chapter. Because apparently, August 10 was another perfectly reasonable day for The Rolling Stones to make history.

August 10, 1963: Two shows: Plaza Theatre Handsworth and ‘First Birthday Party Dance’, Plaza Ballroom Old Hill, Birmingham, England

August 10, 1964: Tower Ballroom, New Brighton, England

August 10, 1973: Release of Rod Stewart’s compilation Sing It Again Rod, with Ronnie as guest
Sing It Again Rod is Rod Stewart’s first greatest-hits compilation, issued by Mercury Records in 1973, although some pressings appeared in late 1972. Drawing from his first four solo albums, it captures his early mix of rock, blues, folk, and pop. The original LP became especially memorable for its die-cut sleeve, designed like an old-fashioned whiskey glass, with Stewart’s smiling face visible behind it. The album also features his distinctive cover of The Who’s Pinball Wizard.

August 10, 1992: Release of Ronnie Wood’s CD-single Show Me / Breathe On Me (both tracks taken from the Slide On This album)
In 1992, while taking a break from the Stones, Ronnie recorded Slide on This in Dublin, using his home and Windmill Lane Studios. The album featured The Edge, Hothouse Flowers, Joe Elliott, and Charlie Watts, among other guests. Its first single, Show Me, appeared in a distinctive digipack featuring Wood’s artwork.

August 10, 1998: Release of the Out of Control CD-single, with 3 versions: 1. Out Of Control (Saber Final Mix)/ 2. Out Of Control (Bi-Polar At The Controls)/ 3. Out Of Control (Bi-Polar’s Fat Controller Mix)
Out of Control is a dark, slow-burning rock track by the Stones released on their 1997 album Bridges to Babylon. Built around a cinematic groove reminiscent of The Temptations’ Papa Was a Rollin’ Stone, the song explores tension, regret, memory, and emotional chaos, becoming a memorable live favorite.

August 10, 2005: Phoenix Concert Theatre, Toronto, Canada (Warm-up club gig for the upcoming A Bigger Bang Tour)

On August 10, 2005, the Rolling Stones snuck into Toronto’s Phoenix Concert Theatre for a surprise warm-up gig before launching their massive A Bigger Bang tour. The place was tiny compared to the stadiums they’d soon be rocking, so fans got the ultimate up-close-and-personal experience. Jagger, Richards, Wood, and Watts blasted through classics and a few fresh tracks, sounding loose but razor-sharp. It felt more like a rowdy rehearsal party than a polished concert — and that’s exactly what made it special. The band’s energy was infectious, and the crowd fed off every riff and lyric. Toronto got a real treat that night, a rare glimpse of rock legends in an intimate setting before hitting arenas worldwide.

August 10, 2010: Release of Lee ‘Scratch’ Perry’s CD Revelation, with Keith as guest on one track: Books Of Moses
Produced with English multi-instrumentalist Steve Marshall (also known as John Saxon) this experimental dub reggae project completed their three-album collaborative series. The recordings were made primarily at Perry’s Swiss Alps studio, with additional sessions in California, New York, and England.
