August 14 is one of those dates when The Rolling Stones’ story refuses to sit still. In 1964, Five By Five lands in Britain, capturing a band still happily raiding its blues and R&B record collections. Seventeen years later, Start Me Up arrives and suddenly the Stones have another monster on their hands. And because apparently one chapter at a time is too easy, the date also brings major concerts across decades, from Berlin to New Jersey and Poland. It’s a wonderfully messy snapshot of the Stones doing what they do best: recording, touring, evolving—and occasionally making history almost by accident.

August 14, 1963: The Rolling Stones hit Eel Pie Island, Twickenham, building the raw live reputation that soon makes them impossible to ignore.

August 14, 1964: Just one year later, they storm Wimbledon Palais, London, proving the Stones’ momentum is anything but slowing down.

August 14, 1964: Release of the Five By Five EP in England (Decca DFE 8590)
SIDE A: 1. If You Need Me/ 2. Empty Heart/ 3. 2120 South Michigan Avenue
SIDE B: 1. Confessin’ The Blues/ 2. Around And Around
Five by Five is the Stones’ second EP, recorded at Chess Studios in Chicago on June 11, 1964. Its title cleverly refers to five tracks by a five-member band. The release blends R&B and blues covers with two original Stones compositions (Empty Heart and 2120 South Michigan Avenue)

August 14, 1981: Release of the Start Me Up / No Use In Crying 7″ single (Rolling Stones Records RSR 108)
Needless to say, Start Me Up ended up turning into one of the Stones’ most famous anthems, rocking stadiums for decades with its killer riff and swagger. The B-side, No Use in Crying, is a mellow, often overlooked tune with a soulful vibe. Together, they’re pure Rolling Stones magic from the early ’80s.

August 14, 1990: The Rolling Stones bring their Steel Wheels/Urban Jungle Tour to the Radrennbahn Weissensee in Berlin, East Germany, for another landmark show.
