Today in Rolling Stones history: January 20
*Click for DAILY ROLLING STONES CHRONOLOGY 1962-present
January 20 is one of those dates that quietly maps the Rolling Stones’ entire arc. From bold reinvention to living-legend status, it captures the band in constant motion. In 1967, Between the Buttons arrived, dividing critics but revealing a sharper pen, broader palette, and a taste for risk that would define the years ahead. Two decades later, Mick Jagger stood on the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame stage, sharing it with the very artists who shaped the music’s DNA. By the mid-1990s, the Stones were still packing stadiums, crossing genres, borders, and generations. Different moments, same restless spirit—January 20 tells the story of a band that never stopped moving forward.

January 20, 1967: Release of Between the Buttons, the Stones’ fifth British studio album (Decca SKL 4852)
SIDE A: 1. Yesterday’s Papers/ 2. My Obsession/ 3. Back Street Girl/ 4. Connection/ 5. She Smiled Sweetly/ 6. Cool, Calm And Collected
SIDE B: 1. All Sold Out/ 2. Please Go Home/ 3. Who’s Been Sleeping Here/ 4. Complicated/ 5. Miss Amanda Jones/ 6. Something Happened To Me Yesterday
The Rolling Stones’ 1967 recordings have long divided opinion. At the time, some critics argued the band was diluting its gritty, roots-based sound by chasing contemporary trends set by the Beatles, the Kinks, Dylan, and the psychedelic scene. Yet heard with fresh ears, Between the Buttons emerges as one of their most rewarding and varied releases. It’s packed with strong, often overlooked songs known mainly to devoted fans. The writing grows sharper and more biting, while the musical settings become increasingly inventive on dark standouts like All Sold Out, My Obsession and Yesterday’s Papers. While She Smiled Sweetly reveals an unexpected tenderness, Connection delivers straight-ahead rock energy. There’s also the very Dylanesque Who’s Been Sleeping Here?. On the American version, the highlights are the chart-topping pair Let’s Spend the Night Together and the graceful, wistful Ruby Tuesday, among Jagger and Richards’ finest melodies.
