Today in Rolling Stones history: July 1
*Click for DAILY ROLLING STONES CHRONOLOGY 1962-present
If you think your neighbors are loud, try being Keith Richards getting evicted for his drumming habits. It’s exactly that specific brand of urban chaos that fueled the production of Neighbours, a track that captured The Rolling Stones at their most claustrophobic and wired. But July 1st isn’t just about hotel room film sets and noise complaints; it’s a date etched into the band’s timeline, from messy Atlantic City gigs to Stockholm’s high-voltage arenas. Grab a drink and dive into the manic, guitar-heavy history that proves why this group has spent decades treating every stage like it’s their last.

July 1, 1981: The Stones turn the Taft Hotel in New York City into a makeshift set for the Neighbours promo video. Directed by Michael Lindsay-Hogg, the clip was a deliberate, campy homage to Alfred Hitchcock’s Rear Window. The concept was born out of reality: Keith Richards had recently been dealing with endless noise complaints and eventual eviction from his apartment. Mick Jagger channeled that frustration into the lyrics, and the video captured the claustrophobia of city life by having the band play their instruments in different rooms of the hotel, while onlookers peered through windows. It was a perfect snapshot of the band in 1981—tight, energized, and leaning into the emerging MTV aesthetic.

July 1, 1995: Release of Mick Taylor & The Hollywood Blues Kings’ CD Coastin’ Home (live at The 14 Below, Santa Monica, Feb. 1995)
1. Sweet Home Chicago/ 2.Coastin’ Home/ 3. I Wonder Why/ 4. You Gotta Move/ 5. You Shook Me/ 6. Can’t You Hear Me Knocking
Though his post-Stones career never quite reached those same heights, Taylor remains a formidable blues-rock guitarist. His 2003 release, Coastin’ Home showcases exceptional playing on extended jams like Can’t You Hear Me Knockin’. It serves as a reminder that the Stones’ finest lead guitarist still excels.

July 1, 1997: Release of Keith Moon’s CD Two Sides Of The Moon with Ronnie Wood as guest on three tracks: 1. Naked Man (unconfirmed)/ 2. Do Me Good (unconfirmed)/ 3. Real Emotion
Critics and fans largely agree that Two Sides of the Moon (originally released in 1975) is not a serious musical effort, but rather a fascinating, chaotic artifact of 1970s rock excess. Often leaning into “train wreck” territory due to Moon’s limited vocal range and jarring covers, the album captures his “Moon the Loon” persona perfectly. By stepping out from behind his drum kit, Moon prioritized infectious energy and wild studio banter over technical skill, creating a highly entertaining, star-studded party record.

Crossroads Revisited captures highlights from Clapton’s iconic guitar festivals held between 2004 and 2013. This anthology effectively showcases the evolution of the event’s roster and performances.
