Today in Rolling Stones history: June 12
*Click for DAILY ROLLING STONES CHRONOLOGY 1962-present
June 12 reads like The Rolling Stones quietly refusing to leave pop culture alone. From early club gigs in 1963 and a first American tour stop in Minneapolis in 1964, to the 1971 release of Wild Horses and Sway, the date keeps circling back with emotional weight and musical evolution. Fast-forward through marathon sets in Boston (1975), a disguised Atlanta show (1978), Wembley in 1999, and modern-era fire in Boston 2013 and Orlando 2015, and you get a band that treats time like a suggestion. Add side notes from Charlie Watts and Bill Wyman’s projects, and June 12 becomes less a date—and more a Rolling Stones time loop with attitude.

June 12, 1971: Release of the Wild Horses/Sway 7″ single in the USA (Rolling Stones Records RS-19101)
Featured on the 1971 album Sticky Fingers, Wild Horses became one of The Rolling Stones’ most enduring and emotional ballads. Keith Richards originally wrote it while touring and longing for his newborn son Marlon, while Mick Jagger later adapted the lyrics into a reflection on the lingering pain and resilience of a fading relationship.

Sway, also from Sticky Fingers, delivers a dark and introspective portrait of uncertainty, emotional fatigue, and lost optimism. The song reflects the lingering effects of the social and personal upheavals that followed the turbulent end of the 1960s, capturing a mood of disillusionment and restless reflection.
