June 9, 1969: Just days after his departure from the Stones was announced, Brian Jones offers his own explanation: “I no longer see eye-to-eye with the others over the discs we are cutting…I want to play my kind of music, which is no longer the Stones music. The music Mick and Keith have been writing has progressed at a tangent, as far as my own taste is concerned.”

By the late ’70s the Stones were still massive but changing trends like punk and disco pushed them out of the spotlight. They responded with Some Girls, a sharp energetic record driven by the disco blues groove of Miss You packed with hooks and tougher rockers. Not to mention standout tracks like Beast of Burden, Shattered and Far Away Eyes mixing grit humor and swagger. Here’s where the band experiments with disco touches while sharpening their rock edge producing some of their most focused work since Exile on Main St. Though not their absolute peak it redefined them for a new era and proved their ability to adapt and survive shifting musical landscapes while still keeping their signature attitude intact making it a landmark late seventies statement and reminding everyone why they remained one of rock’s most enduring and unpredictable bands.
