June 7, 1963: Release of Come On / I Want To Be Loved in the UK, the Stones’ first single ever (Decca F11675)
The band considered their cover version of Chuck Berry’s Come On a little too restrained, but it was their first step on record—a modest beginning that opened the door to one of rock ’n’ roll’s most remarkable careers.
The B-side left little doubt about where the band’s true loyalties lay. The Stones decided to tackle I Want to Be Loved, written by Willie Dixon (first recorded by Muddy Waters) and rooted in Chicago electric blues, reflecting the sound that had inspired the group from the very beginning.

June 7, 1970: Charlie does the photo shoot for the cover of the Stones’ next live album Get Yer Ya-Ya’s Out! – The Rolling Stones In Concert. Although the two photography sessions for the cover featuring Charlie and a donkey are depicted in the documentary film Gimme Shelter, showing Watts and Mick on a section of the M6 motorway adjacent to Bescot Rail Depot in Birmingham, England, posing with a donkey, the actual cover photo was taken in early February 1970 in London, and does not originate from the 1969 session. Legendary photographer David Bailey took care of the photoshoot, featuring Charlie with guitars and bass drums hanging from the neck of a donkey, inspired by a line in Bob Dylan’s song Visions of Johanna (“Jewels and binoculars hang from the head of the mule”). The band would later say “we originally wanted an elephant but settled for a donkey”.

June 7-July 5, 1971: The Rolling Stones began early recording sessions for Exile on Main St. in the basement of Nellcôte, Keith Richards’ villa in Villefranche-sur-Mer, working with the Rolling Stones Mobile Studio parked outside. The makeshift setup quickly turned the space into a dense, late-night creative hub where much of the album’s raw, chaotic energy first took shape.
Keith, about setting up for Exile: “Recording at my place was a necessity. The idea was to find another place to record like a farmhouse in the hills. But they couldn’t find anywhere, so eventually they turned around and looked at me. I looked at Anita and said, ‘Hey, babe, we’re gonna have to handle it’. Anita had to organize dinner sometimes for something like 18 people. We redid the basement kitchen into the studio.”
