*Click for DAILY ROLLING STONES CHRONOLOGY 1962-present
March 17 has always been a landmark date in Rolling Stones history, marking moments that span music, activism, and personal drama. From early gigs in London and Southend-on-Sea to monumental concerts in Tokyo and Mexico City, the band has shown versatility and endurance across decades. Mick Jagger’s activism at Grosvenor Square in 1968 highlights how the Stones’ influence extended beyond music into cultural and political spheres. From recording sessions with Howlin’ Wolf to personal tragedies like (Mick’s girlfriend) L’Wren Scott’s death, March 17 captures the highs, lows, and enduring legacy of the world’s greatest rock ‘n’ roll band.

March 17, 1964: Assembly Hall, Tunbridge Wells, England
Chris Easdown, whose band Chris and the Breakaways shared the bill: “Our encounter with the Stones was not goo. They were an arrogant bunch. When they arrived they didn’t take much notice of us.There was probably about 10 minutes while their roadies set up, and you would have thought they would have said ‘are you OK?’ They were in a world of their own. Charlie Watts sat in the dressing room, sitting like a Buddha.”

March 17, 1968: Outside the American Embassy at Grosvenor Square in London, Mick Jagger takes part in the first major British demonstration against the Vietnam War, joining thousands of protesters demanding an end to the conflict. The crowd is a mix of students, activists, and ordinary citizens, united by outrage and hope for change, while banners and chants fill the square with energy. Mick’s presence draws media attention, highlighting how influential musicians were beginning to use their fame to support political causes. That day, the demonstration becomes not just a protest but a cultural moment, intertwining music, youth, and activism in 1960s Britain.
