Today in Rolling Stones history: March 8
*Click for DAILY ROLLING STONES CHRONOLOGY 1962-present
March 8 offers a fascinating snapshot of The Rolling Stones in motion—on stage, in the studio, and even in court. From a fiery 1999 set at MCI Arena to the chaos surrounding Keith Richards during his 1977 Toronto legal troubles, the date captures rock history unfolding in real time. Rewind further and you’ll find the band storming UK stages in 1971, previewing songs from the legendary Sticky Fingers before leaving Britain behind. Add earlier gigs in Windsor and Scarborough, plus a 2006 release by Bernard Fowler featuring Ronnie Wood, and March 8 becomes a surprisingly rich chapter in Stones lore.

The Rolling Stones’ 1971 tour was a wild, high-energy run through the UK—short but historic. It was their last tour before heading into tax exile in France, making it a kind of farewell to their home turf. Packed with raw, bluesy power, these shows previewed tracks from their soon-to-be-released masterpiece, Sticky Fingers, including Bitch and Brown Sugar. The band was at their peak—Mick Jagger commanding the stage, Keith Richards and Mick Taylor trading killer guitar licks, Bill Wyman and Charlie Watts holding it all down. The setlists mixed new songs with band classics delivered with the swagger only the Stones could pull off.
The tour also had its share of chaos, with riots breaking out at some venues as fans scrambled to get in. The final show at London’s Roundhouse was pure rock ‘n’ roll magic, marking the end of an era. After this, the Stones left England, recorded Exile on Main St., and entered their most legendary phase. It may have been a short tour, but 1971 was a turning point—one last blast before they took their rock ‘n’ roll circus to the rest of the world.

March 8, 1977: Keith returns to court, is rearrested for the cocaine charge and his passport is retained. He is released on a $25,000 bail. In the meantime Mick Jagger and Ron Wood leave Toronto to start working on the live recordings in New York City. Keith, Bill and Charlie record overdubs for the El Mocambo tapes at Interchange Recording Studios in Toronto.

March 8, 1999: MCI Arena, Washington, DC, USA
